Dental Crowns & Bridges in Chennai — Restore, Protect and Replace Your Teeth

A cracked tooth, a root canal-treated molar, a gap where a tooth used to be — these are problems that affect how you eat, how you speak, and how you feel about your smile every day. Dental crowns and bridges are two of the most versatile and durable fixed restorations in dentistry, capable of addressing all of these situations with results that look and function like natural teeth.

At M and M Advanced Dentistry, Adyar, our restorative team has been placing crowns and bridges for patients across Chennai for over \[X\] years. We use digital impression technology, ISO-certified laboratory fabrication, and internationally sourced zirconia and ceramic materials — so every restoration we fit meets the same standard regardless of your budget.

What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that completely covers a damaged, weakened, or discoloured tooth from the gum line upward. It restores the tooth's original shape, size, and strength, and can be colour-matched precisely to the surrounding teeth. Crowns are most commonly placed after root canal treatment (to protect the treated tooth from fracture), over severely decayed teeth where a filling alone cannot provide adequate support, or on implants as the visible tooth component.

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that replaces one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap and anchoring to the teeth (or implants) on either side — called abutment teeth. The artificial tooth in the middle, called a pontic, is fused to the crowns on the abutment teeth, creating a single connected unit that is cemented permanently into place. Unlike dentures, bridges are not removed and function identically to natural teeth during eating and speaking.

Both crowns and bridges are considered fixed restorations — once placed, they stay in the mouth and require no daily removal. With proper care, they last 10–15 years and in many cases significantly longer.

Types of Dental Crowns Available in Chennai

The material a crown is made from determines its strength, appearance, and cost. At M and M Advanced Dentistry, we offer four crown materials to suit different clinical situations and patient preferences.

Types of Dental Bridges

The type of bridge recommended depends on the location of the missing tooth, the condition of the adjacent teeth, and the patient's bone volume.

The Crown & Bridge Procedure — Step by Step

1

Examination, X-rays and treatment planning

Your first visit includes a clinical examination and periapical X-rays to assess the health of the tooth or teeth involved. You receive a written treatment plan with material options, costs, and a timeline before any preparation begins.

2

Tooth preparation and shaping

The tooth receiving the crown is reduced in size by 1–2mm on all surfaces to create space for the crown material. For bridges, both abutment teeth are prepared in the same visit. This is done under local anaesthesia — the procedure is completely painless.

3

Digital impression and temporary crown

We take a digital or physical impression of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. This impression is sent to our certified dental laboratory with detailed shade specifications. A temporary crown is cemented with temporary cement.

4

Lab fabrication and quality check

Your permanent crown or bridge is fabricated in our partner laboratory over 5–7 days. Before it leaves the lab, it undergoes a quality inspection for fit, occlusion, and shade accuracy.

5

Final bonding and bite adjustment

At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown or bridge is seated and checked for fit, margins, contact with adjacent teeth, and bite alignment. Once confirmed, it is permanently cemented.

At M and M Advanced Dentistry, crown and bridge treatment follows a two-appointment process for most cases, completed within 7–10 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

With proper care, zirconia and all-ceramic crowns last 15–20 years or more. PFM crowns typically last 10–15 years before the porcelain layer shows wear or chipping. Metal crowns can last 20+ years. The main factors affecting longevity are oral hygiene, bite forces, and whether you grind your teeth. We check crown margins at every six-month review and reline or replace when needed.

The preparation appointment is performed under local anaesthesia — you will feel pressure but no pain. After anaesthesia wears off, mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for 1–2 weeks and resolves as the tooth settles under the crown. Persistent or severe pain after crown placement needs immediate review — it may indicate the bite height is slightly off, which is a simple chairside adjustment.

A crown can be placed on any tooth that has a healthy root and sufficient bone support. If the tooth has been severely damaged below the gum line, a build-up (post and core) may be needed first to create a stable foundation for the crown. This is assessed during the examination appointment and included in your treatment plan if required.

When a tooth is missing, the bone underneath begins to resorb within 3–6 months. Adjacent teeth drift into the gap, altering your bite. The opposing tooth over-erupts downward into the space. Over time, this leads to bite problems, increased wear on remaining teeth, and a significantly more complex and expensive treatment to correct. Replacing a missing tooth promptly with a bridge or implant is always the more cost-effective long-term decision.
